RE: truck camper and hurricane on its way....what to do??
I don't quite understand the "don't put your jacks down" part once the TC is on your truck? I was in the thinking that while tied to the truck, it would give it anchor points, but with the jacks down as well, that it would widen the stance (provided this is going on a SRW).
What am I missing?
RE: Propane regulator question?
My regulator just took a dump on my camper last week at Newport. I had accidentally ran both tanks dry over the course of this year, and I failed to check them. :S Thought I was good to go for this trip.
Well after filling my first tank (assuming my other one was full), and trying my dad's full tank, I could not for the life of me get the damn thing to flow gas for more than just a spurt at a time. I tried every combination I could with the tank valve, appliance flow, etc.. Nope!
Yanked that S.O.B. out of there, and was lucky to find that there was a well stocked Marine/RV service center about a mile down the road from the campground I was in. My old regulator was the type with no controls or indicator of pressure, and runs two tanks. For the new one, I opted for one with the red/green indicator button on top, and the manual switch over lever. They even swapped the lines from my old unit to the new unit at no charge. Went back to camp, threw this on on the camper, leak tested it, and all is good!
$59 for the regulator, a squirt bottle of leak check solution and 4.4 gallons of LP in the other empty tank. :B
RE: TC wheel bearing repacking, and brake adjustment?
I repack the bearings on my trailers at the start of their intended season, my truck camper has no brakes...my truck on the other hand does!) You must be bored?
Just need to throw something different out there for you guys to chew on. :B
If it reminds someone, of something they forgot or need do, even better!
TC wheel bearing repacking, and brake adjustment?
So, how often do you all repack your wheel bearings, and adjust the brakes on your truck camper?

Oh, wait.. We don't have to deal with that! :B
Now, back to your regular scheduled program.
RE: to leave water or not to leave water is the ?
We fill it, use it and refill as needed. I don't use the city water fill up hardly ever even in campgrounds with full hook ups. If my tank goes empty, I will refill right there, but put the hose away when I am done and continue to use the tank.
This summer, we are still using the original 36 gallons of water I put in back in late July. This includes 3 nights in the coast range, and then 4 nights recently at the beach. Tank level still shows we have close to 1/2 tank.
As for longer storage, I just drain and leave the valve open. If after winterizing, I'll do the sanitizing, otherwise we just fill and go.
RE: Another Oregon coast town to possibly avoid in your TC.
Read the following on another outdoor forum I read, from a fellow Oregonian.
Just giving ya'll a heads up.
We parked four cars in on a dead end road, no signs of any kind, and went across the highway to the beach for about six hours.
Sounds like maybe the owner of the private property is in cahoots with a tow truck company...:h
It very well could be private property, but signs should be posted as such if they don't want people to park there. Also, what's the deal with "cash only" to render the car release. I'd just contact a state trooper to do the negotiation for me, and if that doesn't work, a lawyer. Somehow this activity doesn't sound too legal.
At least someone in the C of C is taking an interest in it, knows it exists, and hopefully clean up the act to either post signs of "private property" if that is the case, or sting those that are involved in illegal activity.

Before we get rolling on the bandwagon to beat up Waldport, do you have a link to the forum?
If the story is true, they're about to find out about the power of the internet!

Another Oregon coast town to possibly avoid in your TC.

Some friends and I spent the weekend in Waldport, OR camping and fishing. The local towing company has a little scamola going where they tow unsuspecting out-of-towners from anywhere they might park. We parked four cars in on a dead end road, no signs of any kind, and went across the highway to the beach for about six hours. When we came back, the cars were gone, no idea where they were. Called the sheriff's department, told us they were probably towed, "happens all the time", but they couldn't tell us who towed them. Took half the next day to track down the towing company, who charged us $250 per car, cash, no receipt.
I recommend you drive straight though Waldport without stopping. Anywhere you park is a "no parking" zone. I'll never go back there again.
RE: Kayak(s) on the roof?
I too have been looking at and trying out different kayaks for some time. Why would you rather sit on it than in it? Don't you get wet sitting on it. I have tried both styles and much prefer to sit in the boat. I also felt the sit in much more stable.
Mostly for the dry storage below, as well as when you get dunked, you can just flip the boat back over, and the surface self drains. If you wear a spray skirt, you either need to know how to do the Eskimo roll, or be able to bail out and reenter safely. Either way, your gunna get wet.
I don't think I would mount up in any style of kayak, canoe or similar apparatus without dressing for immersion. So, once I'm dressed for it, it really doesn't matter much if I get wet.
Now, to be honest with ya, I haven't sat in or on either kind at this point. 90% of my research towards kayak fishing shows sit on kayaks for a multitude of reasons.
Oh, and I want the ability to sit side saddle on a warm day in the lake, casting out and wiggling my feet in the water at the same time. :B
RE: Where have you been told you could not go?
The only places I can think of out here in the PNW are the upperclass diesel pusher RV parks. I would not bother to try to get into one of those parks in a million years. There are alot of truck campers out this way, turning them away is turning way business, especially in the colder months, and or fishing season.
RE: Portable Boats
You know Costco has a few nice inflatables online, some are not too expensive and others even have rear flat transoms for mounting a motor. :C
RE: Kayak(s) on the roof?
Been doing ALOT of reading and looking at different models of Sit On kayaks. Ocean Kayak is putting out a new model that seems to be really big ticket with the fishing crowd.
Here is the newest model from Ocean Kayaks called the Trident 13 Angler.
YouTube shot of it. From Fishyaker.com
The ad with details.
BTW, I am leaning towards fishing in the ocean, utilizing surf launches and landings. :E
Being stable enough to side saddle, or fight big fish, yet relatively narrow to punch through the chop and resist wind effects is important. This one looks like it will fit the bill. Sunday I am going to be testing out the Trident 13 from a guy that sells yaks out in Hood River.
I have measured the inside of my camper, and if I just take this one kayak, I can easily strap it down inside on a simple PVC rack. When we eventually get 2, 3 or more kayaks for the family, I will make a special purpose trailer for all of them, plus bikes, firewood, and other heavy camping gear.
Anyone else ever done a surf launch with a sit on Kayak? Looks like fun!
RE: Which manufacturers closed shop recently?
I have watched the price of fuel double four times in my life. Virtually everybody gets accoustomed to it and life goes on. This time, however, there is almost an attitude that the 'sky is falling.'
I think the biggest reason for this "sky is falling" attitude may be due to how fast the rise was on the fuel. If it took a year or more to raise $0.50 a gallon, we could all assimilate a smoother transition. Raising over a buck a gallon in a year is kinda steep in some folks pocket books, and when everything is tied to this rise in prices, ie... food, shipping, building materials, etc... you have the wide spread panic.
I for one am taking my bets with the whole gas price issue and purchased a brand new 700cc 4x4 utility ATV and a low mileage 2005 4x4 SUV. Prices were good, so I jumped the chance gambling on the rise in price of fuel to slow back down. Out here in Orygun gasoline has started to drop back down again.
RE: TC's not allowed?
I wonder how many RV/Resort Campgrounds that did not allow TC's, or RV's over ten years old are holding up with the high cost of fuel? I cannot help but think they may be a little more humble now.
Wayne
Although a very good question, I really don't care. Frumpy high class rules are just frumpy high class rules and I just avoid the whole siteeeation. :B
It's like me NOT trying to fit in with the Preps back in High Skool. Heck why bother? I had a cute girlfriend (or two), good grades, well dressed letterman jacket, several school records in running, hung out with the half nerd, half weird crowd, and never really cared what the rich kids did. :R
Wayne, much like you - I do for me, and not what impresses others. We don't need those types of campgrounds to enjoy our RV's now do we.
RE: Yellowstone with truck camper
Forgot to mention we will be there, too. We plan to kayak overnight on the lakes in GTNP and YNP. Interested?
Kayak overnight, meaning kayaking in the dark? :h
RE: Yellowstone with truck camper
Traveling around the entire park was very easy with our camper on the truck. We never unloaded the TC while staying there, and it was nice to have the camper available for lunches, restrooms and cola fixes anywhere in the park. :C
RE: Planning Sol Duc 3 - Need some new campground suggestions
for Sea-Tac area...you got me? :h
I avoid that area like I do LA. I hate busy cities with traffic.
The problem is that unless you want to go up 97 instead, you can't get by Seattle without going through some of the worst traffic of the west coast.
When I went up that way last year heading to Penticton, we purposely left later in the day so that we missed both Portland and Seattle traffic on I-5. I think we passed through Seattle area sometime after 9pm. Crashed in the Wal*Mart in Bellingham and continued across the border to Abbotsford and over to Penticton. MUCH MUCH better drive than 97. I hate 97 worse than traffic. :E
97 is so damn boring of a drive.
